Girlhood in Hollywood examined in scholar’s book

Pop culture is obsessed with youth, or at least its appearance. In Precocious Charm: Stars Performing Girlhood in Classical Hollywood Cinema, Gaylyn Studlar examines the work of six stars, including Elizabeth Taylor (right), who helped define American ideas about girls. Studlar directs the Film and Media Studies program in Arts & Sciences.

Red-blood-cell transfusions in children focus of $7.8 million grant

The School of Medicine has received a $7.8 million grant to determine whether the length of time red blood cells (RBCs) are stored affects organ failure in critically ill children who receive RBC transfusions. IT monitoring effective in deterring fraud in restaurant industry

For many firms, losing significant revenue and profit to employee theft has been a cost of doing business. But a new study by Lamar Pierce, PhD, of Olin Business School, finds information technology monitoring is strikingly effective in reducing theft and fraud, especially in the restaurant industry.

Solicitor General Verrilli to deliver Tyrrell Williams Lecture Monday

Donald B. Verrilli Jr., the 46th U.S. solicitor general, will deliver the 2013–14 Tyrrell Williams Lecture. He will discuss “The Solicitor General and Civil Rights Law: Historical Perspectives.” The speech is 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, in the Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom, Anheuser-Busch Hall.
